First Steps is a program developed by the NRA that reduces the Basic Pistol class down from eight (8) hours to approximately four (4) hours. This is accomplished by removing much of the material covered in the eight our class. Where the Basic Pistol program focus is on the pistol, it’s history, and all its variants; the First Steps format lend more specifically toward the semi-auto pistol.
This class does satisfy the training requirement for a CCW permit in several states. It is commonly taught in this area for the Florida permit. Generally the cost for First Steps is the same as the Basic Pistol class. BSP charges$100 with all members of the club receiving a $20 discount.
This, as explained, is a reduced basic class. While it is accepted by many states as adequate training to meet their CCW requirements, it does not necessarily prepare the student for a defensive shooting situation. We strongly encourage all participants who take First Steps to explore additional training that focuses on defensive situations. NRA Personal Protection In The Home is our recommendation for further training.
